Here are the answers to this week's Sunday Picture Quiz. How well did you do?

nidderdale-yorkesfolly-2

1. Yorke's Folly, Nidderdale.

Also known as the Two Stoops, Yorke's Folly was built in the 19th century by the Yorke family of Bewerley Hall, to provide work for local labourers during a period of economic hardship.

As a folly, it serves no purpose, and although it looks like the ruins of something bigger, there never was a larger structure here. That said, there did use to be a third pillar, but one was blown down in a storm in 1893.

Today, it is grade II listed and, towering above the village of Bewerley near Pateley Bridge, it serves as a landmark for walkers and a reminder of the paternalistic largesse of the gentry of a bygone age.

2. Mosaic floor, Chapel of St Mary Magdalen, Ripon

This tessellated floor must one of the oldest relics in full public view in our district. It lies at the east end of the Chapel of St Mary Magdalen in Ripon and is believed to have partially come from a Roman building, as similar designs have been found in Roman excavations elsewhere in the area.

The chapel was originally part of the St Mary Magdalen Hospital, which was founded by Archbishop Thurstan in the early 1100s for the lepers of the Liberty of Ripon.

This end of the chapel was rebuilt after a devastating raid by the Scots in 1321.

3. St Robert's Cave, Knaresborough

This cave, carved into the limestone of Nidd Gorge, is a rare medieval hermitage and was home to St Robert of Knaresborough.

Born Robert Flower in York, he lived as a hermit and attracted followers – particularly the poor and the sick – who revered his holiness and valued his miraculous cures.

Having spent his later years in the cave, he died in 1208 and was recognised as a saint in 1252, although he was never officially canonised.

4. The Old Swan Hotel, Harrogate

This swan is a familiar sight to crime fiction fans, as it stands at the gateway to the Old Swan Hotel in Harrogate.

The Old Swan Hotel was, famously, where author Agatha Christie was found after having 'disappeared' following a personal crisis in 1926. A film called Agatha was made about the episode in 1979, starring Dustin Hoffman, Vanessa Redgrave and Timothy Dalton.

The incident has also given the hotel an undying connection with crime fiction, and it now serves as a hub for the annual Theakston's Crime Writing Festival.
