Here are the answers to this week's Sunday Picture Quiz. How well did you do?

1. White Cottage, Harrogate

This little grade II listed pavilion was built around 1822 and was originally the ticket office for the Crown Baths, later called the Montpellier Baths, which were built around a strong sulphur well. The whole property was bought in 1888 by Harrogate Corporation, which then built the Royal Baths.

The original Chinese-style pump room for Montpellier Baths was demolished in 1954 to make way for a car park, leaving this octagonal building stranded at the bottom end of the Ginnel. It is now ladieswear shop Oaks.

2. Ripon Cathedral crypt

The crypt below Ripon Cathedral is the oldest surviving cathedral structure in England, and is all that remains of the orginal church built here by St Wilfrid in 672 AD.

Yorkshire was part of the Kingdom of Northumbria at the time – England hadn't been 'invented' yet – and the Vikings had yet to invade.

Christianity was also relatively new to this part of the world – King Edwin had only converted to Christianity in 607 – so it's highly likely that some of the first visitors to this crypt were born into families that still believed in the old gods.

3. Devil's Arrows, Boroughbridge

The picture shows two of the three surviving stones, which were quarried nearly 5,000 years ago, probably at Plumpton Rocks, about nine miles away.

They are aligned south-east to north-west, almost exactly in line with the Thornborough Henges, which also date from the late neolithic or early bronze age and lie nearly 10 miles to the north-west.

4. Jubilee Drinking Fountain, Masham

This lovely structure was meant to provide passersby with a cooling drink, conveniently placed for maximum use at a junction. But in the age of cars and indoor plumbing, it has fallen out of use and is now little more than a trickle at a busy intersection.

Its marble plaque originally said that it was erected by the inhabitants 'of Mashamshire' – the area that also emcompasses the villages of Swinton, Fearby, Healey, and High and Low Ellington – but these words were removed by government order in 1941, to hinder any invaders.

Over the course of 1940-41, more than 50,000 road signs, milestones, and railway station markers across the country were removed to disorientate any German invasion force.
