1. The statue of the 1st Marquess of Ripon, Ripon

The 1st Marquess, who started life as George Robinson, was a British politician and Viceroy of India, First Lord of the Admiralty and Leader of the House of Lords.

His father, who was born at Newby Hall, was the 1st Viscount Goderich and served a short stint as Prime Minister when George Canning died in office. As a result, George Robinson was born at 10 Downing Street.

He was part of every Liberal cabinet between 1861 and 1908 – a span of 47 years – serving under Palmerston, Russell, Gladstone and Campbell-Bannerman.

This statue of him was unveiled in Ripon Spa Gardens on May 4, 1912, nearly three years after his death.

2. Staveley Nature Reserve

This 79-hectare Yorkshire Wildlife Trust wetland just north of Knaresborough is a great place for spotting all kinds of wildlife, including foxes, roe deer, and even otters.

But its real strength is its birdlife. It has five bird hides, and if you're lucky – or just persistent – you can see water rail (a speciality), sedge warbler, avocets, snipe, curlew, northern shoveler and even bitterns.

Hebridean sheep and Highland cattle graze the land throughout the year, and entry is free.

3. Mural, Cold Bath Road, Harrogate

This beautiful painting depicting Harrogate's Royal Pump Room adorns the side wall of The Last Post pub.

The mural was commissioned by the pub owner, Simon Colgan, and painted in October 2023 by artist Richard Duffield, who took seven days to complete the project.

4. Low Hall, Nidderdale

Low Hall, between Dacre Banks and Darley, is a grade II listed private home built in 1635. It is best known for its walled gardens, which have in the past been opened to the public through the National Garden Scheme.
