Here are the answers to this week's Sunday Picture Quiz. How well did you do?

1. Harrogate Civic Centre

Harrogate Civic Centre was built in 2017 in order to consolidate Harrogate Borough Council's various departments into a single building instead of five.

Architects Farrell and Clark were tasked with creating an energy-efficient centre for all the borough's civic functions, and for a while the building fulfilled that brief.

But Harrogate Borough Council was abolished in 2023, so the centre is now in the possession of, and used by, North Yorkshire Council – which has various other offices scattered around the county.

2. Foster Beck Water Mill, Bewerley

This mill on Low Wath Road, near Pateley Bridge, was built in 1864, but the magnificent waterwheel, which has a diameter of 35 feet, was added in 1904.

The wheel measures 35 feet in diameter.

The mill was originally built to spin linen yarns, but later produced twine. It ceased production in 1966, becoming a pub for a while, before being converted into 10 flats.

3. Well covers, Harrogate

These are such a familiar sight to anyone who has spent any time in Low Harrogate that more often than not they're overlooked.

Each one conceals a different well, and they're dotted around Crescent Gardens and the Valley Gardens – where the area formerly known as Bogs Field is said to have more springs of different chemical composition than anywhere else in the world.

4. Misericord carvings, Ripon Cathedral

This fantastic carving is one of 34 misericords in Ripon Cathedral.

In pre-Reformation England, when all churches were still Catholic, churches observed the daily divine offices – prayers at set times throughout the day – and the clergy were expected to remain standing throughout.

A rabbit is seized by a griffin.

Misericords – literally 'pity of the heart' – are little perches that allowed clergymen to take the weight of their feet without fully sitting.

Two dragons bite each other's neck.

Because they come into contact with backsides, it was not considered appropriate for them to feature sculptures portraying religious motifs, so instead you get figures and scenes from secular life – such as pigs playing the bagpipes.
