Here are the answers to this week's Sunday Picture Quiz. How well did you do?

spofforth-castle-2

1. Spofforth Castle

This was actually more of a fortified manor house than a castle, but it was nevetheless an important place in its day.

William de Percy, a favourite of William the Conqueror, built a manor house here in the 11th century, and Spofforth remained the principal seat of the Percy family until the late 14th century.

It was reputedly here that rebel barons drew up Magna Carta in 1215.

The Percys supported the House of Lancaster during the Wars of the Roses, and when the Yorkists won the Battle of Towton, just south of Tadcaster, in 1461, the castle was burnt to the ground.

It was restored 100 years later, in 1559, but by this time the Percys had moved to Alnwick in Northumberland – where they remain to this day.

The castle was abandoned in the early 1600s, then ruined in the English Civil War, and finally donated to the state in 1924.

2. Ripon Courthouse Museum

This Georgian building on Minster Road has not changed much since it was built to replace a medieval structure in 1830. Both buildings were used for the Quarter Sessions – local courts that were held four times yearly from 1388 onwards.

From this court, men and women were fined, sentenced to hard labour and even transported to Australia.

The courthouse continued to be used for the Quarter Sessions until they were discontinued in 1953. It was then used as a Magistrates' Court until 1998 and opened as a museum a year later.

3. Bullet holes, Ripley

These pock marks in the east wall of All Saints' Church in Ripley are a reminder of a time when England was at its most bitterly divided.

Not strictly 'bullet holes', they were actually made by musket balls when the victorious Parliamentarians, or Roundheads, shot captive Royalists after the Battle of Marston Moor in 1644.

It was one of the pivotal conflicts of the English Civil War – when the Royalists under Prince Rupert of the Rhine lost the battle, they also lost control of the North.

The commander of the Parliamentarians, Oliver Cromwell, is believed to have stayed at Ripley Castle the night after the battle. It is said he was watched through the night by a pistol-toting 'Trooper' Jane Ingleby, who was desperate to prevent the castle being searched, as her brother, Sir William, had fought at the battle on the losing side – as had she!

nunmonkton

4. Nun Monkton

We don't usually feature whole villages in the picture quiz, but for Nun Monkton we'll make an exception.

That's because it's so little known compared with most other villages in the district, mainly because it's not really on the way to anywhere.

You get there by turning left off the A59 just after Kirk Hammerton, and once you're there, there are only two options: either retrace your steps or loop back via Thorpe Underwood. Going beyond the village is not an option, because the River Ouse lies in the way, and there are no crossings between the York ring road and Aldwark toll bridge.

As a result, not many people pass through the village, and it remains a peaceful idyll, with expansive village green, pond, pub and primary school.

Please do send us tricky pics of the area that we can include – and we'll credit your contribution. Thank you!
