Here are the answers to this week's Sunday Picture Quiz. How well did you do?

    1. Arthington Viaduct

This magnificent structure on the Leeds-Harrogate railway line straddles the River Wharfe near the village of Castley, right on the edge of the Harrogate district. In fact, only 15 of its 21 arches are on our 'patch' – the other six are in the parish of Arthington, in West Yorkshire.

It was completed in 1849, the year after Crimple Viaduct, and each of its spans extends to 60 feet (18 metres) and rises to a maximum height of 80 feet (24 metres) – making it younger, shorter and lower than Crimple, but no less photogenic.

    3. Misericord carving, Ripon Cathedral

This wonderful carving is one of 34 misericords in Ripon Cathedral, that were created between 1489 and 1494.

It shows the 7th-century Anglo-Saxon Saint Cuthman pushing his mother in a wheelbarrow. According to legend, when Cuthman's father died, he and his mother decided to head east from their home in southern England, in the direction of the setting sun.

As she was an invalid, he carried her in a wheelbarrow, which he supported with a rope around his shoulders. When the rope broke, he replaced it with one he made of withies, and he decided that when that one broke it would be a sign from God that he should build a church there. That happened at Steyning in West Sussex, where a church – rather counterintuitively called St Andrews – stands to this day.

It is said that Cuthman was baptised by St Wilfrid, which perhaps explains his appearance in this misericord carving in Ripon.

Incidentally, a misericord is a kind of seat. In pre-Reformation England, when all churches were still Catholic, they observed the daily divine offices – prayers at set times throughout the day – and the clergy were expected to remain standing throughout.

Misericords – literally 'pity of the heart' – are little perches that allowed them to take the weight of their feet without fully sitting.

Because they come into contact with backsides, it was not generally considered appropriate for them to feature sculptures portraying holy motifs, so instead you get non-biblical figures and scenes – such as men pushing their mothers in wheelbarrows, looking for a place to build a church.

    3. Duchy College, Harrogate

If you recognised this building, you probably though it was Harrogate Ladies' College. If so, you would have been right not so long ago, but nowadays it's called Duchy College.

The governors had to think of a new name for the private school, which occupies a considerable chunk of the leafy Duchy Estate, largely because it now admits boys.

The transition is phased, with boys admitted to Year 7 and Year 12 (the lower sixth) from 2026, and more joining them as they progress through the school, one year at a time. Duchy College will be fully co-educational by 2030.

    4. Pumping station, Swinsty Reservoir

This building, which stands near the southern (dam) end of Swinsty Reservoir, dates from the 1970s, when the reservoir was built. It houses machinery that is still in use, albeit in partially updated form, and can be viewed through the windows by passing walkers.

Swinsty Reservoir is the third in a cascade of four reservoirs in the Washburn Valley, downstream from Thruscross and Fewston, and upstream of Lindley Wood Reservoir. They supply drinking water to Leeds and the surrounding area.
