It’s a well-known fact that we’re a nation of dog-lovers – in fact, according to a survey by UK Pet Food, there are currently 13.5 million domestic dogs in the UK, an increase of 1.5 million since 2023.

For so many households, a pet really is an extension of the family – albeit a fluffy, four-legged member. So, it stands to reason that all ‘fur-parents’ want the best for their dog when it comes to care.

That’s where The Harrogate Dog comes in – a dog day care centre in the heart of Harrogate that understands just how important people’s pooches are and treats them accordingly.

An open, welcoming and safe environment

Founded by Sarah Smith, the centre prides itself on offering ‘hours of safe socialisation, exercise, education and fun’ in an open, stimulating environment, for all their furry clients.

Founder and director Sarah Smith moved the business to the new premises at Strayside House in April this year. While a relatively new addition to the town centre, The Harrogate Dog has already been awarded the highest star rating from North Yorkshire Council Animal Welfare.

Speaking about the reception her business has received since opening, Sarah said:

It’s been fantastic so far, we’ve had some really lovely feedback - from our human clients of course, but the dogs all seem very happy too.

The location is really handy for many people who commute in and out of Harrogate, to drop off and pick up their dog as part of their workday routine.

Care worth barking about

For the team at The Harrogate Dog, the safety and comfort of their four-legged customers is paramount to success. That’s why before any dog is accepted into the centre, there’s a comprehensive meet and greet process beforehand.

This includes a wellness check and a behavioural assessment to evaluate interactions with staff and other dogs, walking on the lead and more. This allows all parties to get comfortable with one another and ensures that pets can have their needs met on a bespoke basis.

For example, provisions can be made for both puppies and elderly dogs who might need a different setting in which to thrive, away from the main adult dog area.

‘I have complete peace of mind leaving my dog in their care’

Don’t just take the furry, grinning faces plastered across The Harrogate Dog’s social media as endorsement – since opening its door, there’s been plenty of positive feedback from fur parents too.

Customer Matt Cotton said:

I highly recommend The Harrogate Dog Day Care. My dog recently started going there and he seems to really enjoy himself.

The staff are absolutely brilliant, and I know my boy is in safe hands and being well taken care of. The facility has spacious play areas where the dogs can run and burn off energy, and the caregivers design activities to keep them stimulated.

As an attentive and communicative team, I have complete peace of mind leaving my dog in their care.

Elizabeth Hughes added:

My dogs Wicket & Bobby absolutely love it - which you can tell by the extreme levels of excitement when they arrive and the sleeping they do when they get back.

It is an ideal location, with fast drop off and pick up, plus having looked around the facilities it has everything I could ask for to keep the dogs safe and entertained all day with options for separated sleeping, eating - whatever is needed - which was important to me too.

An evening of paw-sitivity

To celebrate the opening of The Harrogate Dog, the team is inviting customers old, new and prospective to come and raise a glass, and see the centre for themselves.

On Thursday, June 27, from 7pm onwards human-only attendees will be able to chat to staff and other dog-owners. There will be plenty of food and drink available – and doggy bags to take home of course.

RVSP via email at info@theharrogatedog.co.uk to confirm attendance.
