You might not know that Furniture by HDS is where it is if you weren’t specifically looking for it, but this hidden gem situated in Great Ouseburn, York, is making its impact locally and on the world.
Saving old furniture from landfill by refurbishing and remodelling it, founder and owner Harry Smith has not long moved into the new premises, a huge showroom not far from his house. It's a far cry from his parents' dining room where he started the business.
It showcases pieces that Harry has sourced from all over the UK, and it is also his base for his workshop.
The inspiration behind Harry starting the business when he was just 18 years old was a coffee table that he refurbished for his mum after completing a joinery apprenticeship. Once he had restored it and painted it, it looked brand new. Harry says:
He then started to collect furniture, and so the collection went from a dining room to the shed with additional static caravan storage, to what is now the warehouse, all while working full-time and refurbishing furniture as a hobby on evenings and weekends. He says:
As well as the pieces in his workshop that people can buy in-store or online, Harry can also help find furniture for those looking for it, and he delivers nationwide too.
The other half of the business is restoring and refurbishing furniture. Harry offers quotes after seeing a piece, and can show clients examples of past work. He’s passionate about the process and gets the most satisfaction seeing how they are transformed before and after. He says:
Another huge part of his business is furniture remodelling, where he completely transforms the use of an item – for example, turning a wardrobe into a larder. This not only means that a client has a one-off piece, but Harry can also improve its future functionality too. He concludes:
And this is the essence of his business.
So, if you've got pieces you're looking to give an overhaul, restore or add to your collection, Harry can advise on what will work best for the functionality and the space in your home, so why not give him a call?
