Tough day in America for Harrogate’s global sports stars
It proved to be a tough day in the United States for two of Harrogate’s elite international sports stars yesterday.
Golfer John Parry, competing in the PGA Championship, shot a five over par opening round of 76 to place joint 125th of 154 players.
Parry needs a strong second round today to make the cut at the Quail Hollow Club in North Carolina in what is one of the game’s four major tournaments.
He wasn’t the only golfer to struggle: US Masters champion Rory McIlroy shot a 74 and is also in danger of missing the cut.
There was more injury agony for strongman Luke Richardson at the World’s Strongest Man competition in Sacramento, California.
Richardson hoped he had put years of serious injuries behind him last month when he won Europe’s Strongest Man in Leeds.
He arrived in America as one of the dark horses for the competition, which began yesterday with 25 entrants taking part in five heats to qualify for the final.
But his participation lasted just 13 seconds before he damaged his biceps again in the opening loading medley event.
Writing to his 131,000 followers on Instagram, the former Starbeck lifeguard said
This is life, raw and uncut. Sometimes the fairy tale doesn’t go the way you want, rarely does for me honestly. But what a thrill. What a journey. What a blessing. I’ve so much to be grateful for despite what may seem like an overwhelming amount of negatives.
