Retailer Toys R Us is set to open in Harrogate this weekend.

The news comes after WHSmith submitted a planning application for new signage at the Harrogate store in April.

The toy giant, which fell into administration in 2018, was revived by WHSmith in 2022.

WHSmith, which has more than 1,700 stores across 30 countries, began opening Toys R Us concessions inside its stores last year, and has announced Harrogate will be the latest addition to its 30 openings this summer.

The firm added it would stock toys from brands including Barbie, Bluey, LEGO, Peppa Pig, Squishmallows, Star Wars and more.

Ian Sanders, group commercial development director at WHSmith, said:

We’re really excited to be opening Toys R Us in Harrogate. WHSmith is known for being the hub of the high street by providing customers with a range of great products and services.

Partnering with Toys R Us gives us a leading toys and games range in our stores and means customers have even more reasons to shop with us. We look forward to welcoming many more customers into our store.

To celebrate the opening on Saturday (June 8), there will be an official ribbon cutting ceremony, as well as the opportunity for the first 50 customers to receive a free goodie bag.

There will also be a life-size Geoffrey the Giraffe character at the opening.

Following the initial nine in-store openings in 2023, Toys R Us concessions are also set to open in Halifax, Nottingham and Brighton this summer.

Toys R Us Harrogate will open in WHSmith, on Cambridge Street, this Saturday. The opening event will take place from 9am to 1pm.
