A traditional sweet shop has returned to Boroughbridge after closing earlier this year.

Sweet and Seasonal , which sells traditional sweets, chocolate and gifts, opened on the High Street in 2022 but closed in March 2024 due to issues with its lease.

It reopened in the former Comb with Collars unit on 6 Fishergate over the weekend (September 28).

Owner Callum Ivel, 30, told the Stray Ferret it was a “difficult decision” to close but the business had became financially unviable in its former premises.

He added it was the right time to reopen, he said:

We are delighted to be back. We were very sad to close just as the business was becoming established and we have had so many lovely comments and welcome messages from our fantastic customer base.

We have such a strong and loyal customer base in Boroughbridge, and the market is still there for us, we have all the infrastructure in place and we're heading into the most exciting time of the year in the confectionery world - Halloween and Christmas.

Our customers have kept in touch and are very excited for us to be coming back to the High Street.

The shop will employ four staff members: Mr Ivel, his mother, and two former staff members who live in the local area.

The business has relocated into a smaller premises which means that the shop has “become more streamlined with its product range", said Mr Ivel. He added this has made him “really think about what our customers want from us.”

He said:

We are very similar to what we were before just much smaller, we have managed to fit nearly all our sweet range into the new premises. Sadly, we no longer have space for our popular craft room.

The shop still sells classics such as liquorice, Wine Gums and Fruit Salad alongside an American sweet range including Nerds and Laffy Taffys, as well as locally sourced produce such as chocolate from Inspired Chocolate in Leyburn.

Mr Ivel said:

We hope to continue to be able to bring that sense of joy and nostalgia. We love hearing adult’s stories of the previous sweet shops in Boroughbridge and how they used to come and get their sweets weighed out for them. We pride ourselves on that personal experience for our customers, remembering their favourites and recommending alternatives.

It is as much a passion as it is a business for us and we get a real sense of enjoyment out of bringing so much joy to the high street and helping our local town's high street to continue to thrive.

We are thrilled to be back and we love a challenge of helping find your perfect gifts for loved ones or trying to find your nostalgic favourites, our shop has family at the heart of it and we welcome customers old and new into the shop.

The shop will open Tuesday to Thursday 10-4pm, Friday 10.30-4.30pm and Saturday 10-4pm.
