Temporary traffic lights that were due to be installed in the centre of Killinghall this week have been taken away.
The lights were intended to improve traffic flow through the village while Tesco carries out eight weeks of roadworks to create a roundabout and access road for its new supermarket a mile away at New Park.
The diversion route takes traffic through the centre of Killinghall and it was thought introducing lights at the junction of A61 Ripon Road and B6161 Otley Road would help to keep vehicles moving.
However, traffic ran smoothly yesterday when work began at New Park, which led to questions about whether the lights were necessary.
There were also concerns that installing them would lead to tailbacks in and out of the village.
The lights arrived this morning but were not activated and have now been removed.
Councillor Michael Harrison, who represents Killinghall, Hampsthwaite and Saltergate on the council, said:
The council are reviewing the traffic situation dynamically. Initially if was felt the signals would be needed at the B6161/A61 to ensure the flow of traffic, but up until now haven’t been needed. Having them on would inevitably be very disruptive, so they will only use them if absolutely necessary. So far, not needed, but the council will keep the situation under review.
