A programme of rolling road closures is underway on Dishforth Road, near Ripon, due to work by Yorkshire Water.
The company said in a statement today it had begun a £2 million project to replace 4.5km of water mains in the centre of Dishforth.
The project follows 12 burst mains in the area over the last five years. Dishforth Road has been prone to frequent closures at short notice.
Contractors United Living have begun work in Dishforth village between the junction of Topcliffe Road to just after the junction with Baynes Drive.
Temporary traffic management is in place and will move as work progresses.
The closures will occur in 300-metre sections, starting at the junction from the A1, working towards Sharrow, and finishing just after the junction with Strait Lane. Diversions will be in place.
The project is expected to complete at the end of June.
Nichola Fairbairn, project manager at Yorkshire Water, said:
As part of Yorkshire Water’s largest ever investment, we are delivering a significant upgrade to our clean water network by replacing 238km of mains in Yorkshire over the next 12 months – Dishforth is one of the first areas to undergo the works.
It’s a really important scheme which will help us to deliver the quality and reliability of service that our customers expect – with bursts and loss of supply much less likely.
We’ll be working quickly and doing everything that we can to keep disruption to a minimum whilst we deliver this important work.
Yorkshire Water recently spent £4.8 million on its Dishforth wastewater treatment works to improve water quality in the River Swale and to expand the capacity of the site to cope with increased flows coming from new developments in the area.
