Former footballer and pundit Chris Kamara made a surprise visit to a primary school near Ripon yesterday (September 26).
Kamara, who played for Leeds United, Sheffield United and Middlesborough, spent the morning at Sharow CE Primary School, which last year named one of its classes after him.
Teachers and pupils decided to name classes after their sporting heroes who had “triumphed adversity”, Sharow CE Primary School said, and its year three and four class settled on the name ‘Kamara Class’.
Kamara said:
I thought, 'what a wonderful school it must be name a class after me'.
Kamara was quizzed by Sharow CE Primary School pupils.
The former Bradford City and Stoke City manager, affectionately known as Kammy, spoke to pupils about his career in football and broadcasting, as well as his early life in Middlesborough and a stint in the Royal Navy.
Pupils quizzed Kamara about his favourite footballers, the number of goals he scored and, most importantly, the most famous person he has met.
Bestowing his own wisdom on the Sharow schoolchildren, Kamara said:
Anybody can say whatever they want about anybody, but if in your heart and in your head you’ve got desire and want to be somebody, you can be somebody.
Headteacher, Jacqui Palmer, said the school was delighted to host Kamara. She added:
We had named a class after Chris because he’s such an inspirational character. It was wonderful for the staff and pupils to hear from him and the story of his life.
Our children got to hear how he has triumphed even when everything has not gone to plan for him - and he gave them some great advice. We were thrilled to have him visit our school.
The school thanked Kamara with a voucher for Harry's Fish and Chips in Masham.
