Village gets ready for celebration of circus-themed scarecrows
The main street through the village of Minskip, near Boroughbridge, will be lined with a colourful cast of characters this weekend (September 5-6) for the village's annual Scarecrow Competition.
The event – whose theme this year is The Circus – has become known for the high standard of its straw-stuffed creations, giving the head judge, BBC Radio York's Elly Fiorentini, a difficult job.
The theme this year will be The Circus. Previous themes have included the Olympics, Pantomimes, and Nursery Rhymes.

Money raised from the competition will go towards the upkeep of St John's Church in Minskip.
One of the main organisers, Debbie Hargreaves, said:
It’s absolutely wonderful how so many villagers have made scarecrows in the past and I expect the same this year. The competition has really caught the imagination in recent years of the village and the standard is incredibly high. It’s great fun and all proceeds from the competition go towards our little church, which, like so many rural churches, is desperately in need of money.
Apart from raising money for the church, the Scarecrow Competition is a brilliant way of creating and enhancing community spirit within Minskip. We pride ourselves on being a friendly and welcoming village and this weekend is a great example of this.
As has become the tradition, home-baked cakes and hot drinks will be on offer on both days of the weekend from midday to 4pm in the church garden. Alongside the cakes, there will be ice creams, Pimms and a barbecue on the Sunday, also from noon till 4pm, as well as a tombola, plant stalls and a pre-loved stall.
The Scarecrow Competition winners will be announced in the church garden on the Sunday afternoon.
Ms Hargreaves said:
We will have car parking in the village field, so pop along and see the exhibits then call in for a cuppa and a bite to eat as you go round.
We look forward to welcoming you all, and donations will be gratefully received via boxes around the village and in the car park.

The suggested entry fee is £10 and prizes and donations have been made by a number of Minskip businesses, including Minskip Garage, Yolk Farm Shop and Minskip Garage, and Morrisons.
Ms Hargreaves thanked the businesses for their generosity and added:
I’m sure that this special weekend will mean that Minskip, once again, will be the talking point of the local area, cementing our reputation as the one of the finest creators of scarecrows in the whole of North Yorkshire.
