People in Ripon will go to the polls on Thursday, November 27 to vote on whether they have confidence in the mayor, Councillor Barbara Brodigan.

The poll was proposed by Brian McHugh and triggered when he and 12 other local people — three more than the required number — voted for it at a parish meeting on November 3.

You can read more about that meeting, and the issues involved, here and here.

The cost of the poll, which is expected to be between £5,000 and £7,000, will be shared by council taxpayers in Ripon. The result is non-binding.

Five polling stations will be open between 4pm and 9pm. The locations are:

  • Harrogate Road Methodist Church, Harewood Road, Ripon HG4 1TG (Minister Ward)
  • The Salvation Army is not available on the day of the poll, so a second station will be open within Harrogate Road Methodist Church, Harewood Road, Ripon HG4 1TG (Moorside Ward)
  • Cadet Centre, Clotherholme Road, Ripon, HG4 2DW (Spa Ward Part 1)
  • Holy Trinity Church, Kirby Road, Ripon HG4 2EY (Spa Ward Part 2)
  • Allhallowgate Methodist Church, Victoria Grove, Ripon HG4 1LG (Ure Bank Ward)

The question on the ballot paper is: ‘Do you have confidence in Councillor Barbara Brodigan?’ Poll cards will not be issued.

The count of votes will take place at Harrogate Road Methodist Church as soon as is practicable after the close of poll at 9pm.

A by-election will take place in Ure Bank tomorrow (November 20) to elect a councillor for Ripon City Council following the resignation of Jo Bate. You can read about who is standing here.
