“We want Weaver out” was the tune of a section of Harrogate Town supporters today (January 24) as the club lost its seventh game in nine matches.
Simon Weaver’s side hardly looked a threat as they lost 3-0 at home to Gareth Ainsworth’s Gillingham.
Only after they had conceded twice did the Sulphurites take the initiative, but ultimately failed to score for the seventh successive home match in League Two.
The last time home supporters saw a league goal at Wetherby Road was Jack Muldoon’s header against Crewe in October.
This is just a part of a much wider issue for Town.
With Newport beating Chesterfield today, Harrogate are now two points adrift at the foot of the table, having played one more game than the Exiles.
They are three points away from safety, with 22nd-placed Bristol Rovers also enjoying a game in hand over the North Yorkshire side.
The culmination of flat performances, bad results and a lack of goals led a small section of the Kop to lose their patience in the 77th minute today, when they briefly started to call for the manager’s head.
Simon Weaver wasn’t on the touchline after being sent off against Shrewsbury last week.
But even in the matches in which he has been close to the action, Harrogate have failed to win in the league since September, when they beat today’s opponents away.
There were positives today – some of Harrogate’s new signings looked effective.
Although he only saw 25 minutes of action, QPR loanee Emmerson Sutton looked lively and played with a youthful tenacity that Harrogate desperately need at present.
But the many new signings need to bed in fast if Town are to be in with a chance of pulling away from the bottom of the table.
Their next match is at home to Fleetwood on Tuesday (January 27). Kick off is 7.45pm.
