Work to extend a cemetery in Pateley Bridge to cater for an estimated 73 more years of burials is expected to start in May.
North Yorkshire Council agreed to a half-hectare extension of the site in November, which will create space for 314 burial plots, 48 natural burial plots and 364 ash internments.
The move comes as the cemetery, at Panorama Walk, is currently expected to be full in two years.
This week, the council confirmed that Hampshire-based CDS Group had been appointed to carry out the work.
In a decision notice of the appointment published on Wednesday (March 5), the authority said that the company had been contracted to undertake the extension work by the now defunct Harrogate Borough Council.
The borough council previously purchased 2.5 acres of additional land at a cost of £32,500 to facilitate the extension in March 2023.
North Yorkshire Council said the move to appoint CDS Group was advised for “consistency and continuity purposes”.
Meanwhile, Pateley Bridge Town Council said in a statement that work is expected to start on the extension in May.
A post on the town council’s social media said any disruption caused by the work would be “confined to daylight hours” and that construction would last “a limited period”.
The town council said:
NYC is currently in the planning stage to carry out the construction and landscaping works to deliver the cemetery extension later this year. NYC is hoping to start these works sometime in May and finish in September.
Although there will inevitably be some disruption due to increased noise, this will only be confined to daylight hours and will be for a limited period until the cemetery extension is completed.
