Shopping for Christmas gifts isn’t my idea of fun because I want to tailor gifts to people which can be time consuming.

I often find myself reaching out to the same brands for hampers with elements that I know the recipients may not like. Also buying hampers from a company means you end up with similar sweet, savoury or boozy products depending on the businesses you buy from.

That's where personalised gifts or a DIY hamper comes in. Shopping for artisan products is easy in the Harrogate district - we're pretty spoilt for choice.

Whether you’re crafting something special for a foodie friend, a family member with a sweet tooth, or even a pet lover, a homemade Yorkshire hamper is an excellent way to spread festive cheer.

For buying on a budget

When building a hamper, the little things often bring the biggest smiles.

Locally made jams and chutneys: Look for jars of fruity jam or tangy chutney from local producers like Rosebud Preserves in Masham. Their Yorkshire rhubarb and ginger jam is a classic.

Yorkshire tea: No hamper is complete without a box of this iconic brew. Add a touch of tradition that’s easy on the wallet.

Handmade fudge or toffee: Consider sweet treats from Grandma Wild’s in Steeton or The Yorkshire Dales Fudge Company. Perfect for stocking fillers too.

Mini bake mixes: Create your own jar mixes for kids. Layer flour, sugar, cocoa powder, and mini marshmallows in a jar with instructions for making Yorkshire hot chocolate brownies. It’s a fun, interactive gift for families.

Cheese portions: Pop in a small wedge of Wensleydale cheese with cranberries—a Yorkshire classic. Many local delis sell smaller portions perfect for gifting.

For a pricier showstopper

If you want to splurge on standalone items or include a few indulgent items that elevate your hamper into a showstopper then there are plenty of options.

Artisan gin or whisky: One thing Harrogate isn't short of is indepedent distillers - Slingsby Gin from Harrogate, Dutch Barn vodka and award-winning flavoured liqueurs from Ellers Farm Distillery or Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery’s Filey Bay Whisky can add a touch of sophistication to any hamper.

Truffle oil or gourmet honey: Add some decadence with truffle-infused oil or heather honey from local producers like Shepherd’s Purse.

Luxury chocolates: Look for handmade treats from Cocoa Joe’s in Boroughbridge and York Cocoa House, known for its rich, ethically sourced chocolate.

A Christmas pudding with a twist: Try something like Lottie Shaw’s Sticky Figgy Pudding for a unique take on a traditional dessert.

For a homemade touch

Gifting homemade goodies or adding them to your hamper makes it extra special. Yorkshire’s bountiful produce provides plenty of inspiration.

Pickled veggies: Make your own pickled red cabbage or spiced onions, presented in reusable jars with festive ribbons.

Shortbread or ginger biscuits: Bake biscuits in festive shapes. Children can help with decorating for a personal touch. This would make excellent gifts for teachers and grandparents.

Infused spirits or oils: Create rosemary-infused olive oil or spiced rum at home. Bottled in pretty glass containers, they’re both practical and beautiful.

For foodie-adjecent gifts

While food is the star, a few thoughtful non-food additions can enhance the experience, and Yorkshire is not short on those.

Tea towels or aprons: Look for Yorkshire-themed designs featuring local landmarks or festive patterns.

Mini cutting boards or cheese knives: Perfect for pairing with those wedges of Wensleydale.

A recipe card: Write down a family recipe or one that uses Yorkshire ingredients, like a traditional parkin cake.

Yemi's verdict

This year, let your gifts reflect the warmth and charm of Yorkshire. A carefully curated hamper not only supports local businesses but also makes for a deeply personal and thoughtful gift.

Whether you’re sticking to a budget or indulging in a little luxury, there’s no better way to celebrate the season.
