Every Monday, the Stray Ferret publishes a round-up of sports action in the Harrogate district, focusing on the first team results of local amateur and semi-professional sports clubs. Here's what happened during the week of December 1 to 7.
Harlow Hill won their 13th consecutive game in all competitions to progress to the next round of the West Riding FA County Challenge Cup on Saturday. A second-half goal each for Alfie Lumsden and Tendai Irvine Machama was enough to see off Burley Trojans. Harlow will play Tadcaster Magnets in the fourth round on January 3.
Knaresborough Town were beaten away at Horbury on Tuesday after an ‘incorrectly given’ red card. Jack Lazenby was sent off as Horbury came back from 1-0 down to win 3-1 at home. In a social media post on Sunday, Knaresborough said they had appealed the card, and it had been overturned on review. A win could have taken Knaresborough from 12th to eighth in the NCEL Premier Division.
Harrogate reduced the gap with Regional 1 North East leaders, Heath, to six points after gaining another five points on Saturday. Opponents Sandal entered halftime 12-7 up, but a yellow card early in the second half proved to be their undoing as Harrogate went on to score four tries in 20 minutes and lead 12-42. Two late Sandal tries weren’t enough to undo the damage, and the game finished 31-42.
Ripon Rugby Club rescued a draw in the dying seconds of their home fixture against Baildon on Saturday. Losing 9-16 with a minute left, a try and conversion by Morgan Clark saw both teams leave with a share of the spoils. Ripon are seventh in the Counties 2 Yorkshire league. Baildon are in sixth, ahead of them by two points.
It appears no one can stop Ripon Rockets in this year’s NYNAL Senior Winter League. A 61-31 victory over the Bullets saw them maintain their 10-point lead at the top of the table. They have a goal difference of 193, which is 101 better than second-placed Storm.
