Two Harrogate girls lined up against some of the country's best junior golfers at Pannal Golf Club today (August 20).
A total of 132 players teed-off this morning in the North of England under-16 Amateur Stroke Play Championships began today.
The tournament featured 106 boys and 26 girls - 15 of whom are from Yorkshire.
Mila Dodds from Harrogate, competing for Sand Moor Golf Club in Leeds, played in the under-14s division, finishing the first day tied second at four over par.
Sophie McKelvie, of Oakdale Golf Club, played in the under-16s division and finished at three over par.
Andrew Asquith, men's captain at Pannal Golf Club, said:
The number of young golfers wishing to play in in what will be the 24th staging of this golf tournament is very encouraging. It augurs well for the future of golf in the UK and Europe. I am sure that many of them will go on to very successful golf careers.
The tournament began yesterday with the international match between England and Scotland under-16s, which saw England win in both the singles and the foursomes.
Everyone will play 18 holes again tomorrow. The top 33 will then go through to the 36-hole final on Friday.
Previous competitors include Matthew Fitzpatrick, the 2022 US Open champion, Lottie Woad, winner of the Ladies' Scottish Open last month, and Pablo Martin who became the first amateur to win a European Tour event in 2007.
