Work underway in Market Place East

The most extensive city centre roadworks in almost 25 years are underway in Ripon, with the start of North Yorkshire Council's £630,000 programme of reconstruction and resurfacing this morning.

The first phase of the work, scheduled to last until November 24, has begun on Market Place East and will see the removal of paving block sets and their replacement with an ashphalt surface.

With the inevitable disruption that the works are causing, North Yorkshire Council highways department is holding a 'meet the contractor' drop-in session for all interested parties at Ripon Town Hall between 4pm and 7.30 pm tomorrow evening (October 29).

A council spokesperson said:

This will be an opportunity to discuss the intended works further and the traffic management arrangements for each phase of the works.

Traffic Restrictions:

From today until November 24, the following roads  will have traffic restrictions in place: Market Place East, Kirkgate down to Duck Hill junction with Water Skellgate, Kirkgate to the junction with Minster Road and Market Place South. All other roads will be open to traffic.

Car parks

North Yorkshire Council has confirmed that during the roadworks, the first half hour of parking on the Market Square car park, will be free of charge and access to all car parks in Ripon will be maintained, with diversion routes in place as required.

Access to The Arcade, Cathedral and St Marygate car parks will be via Moss's Arcade, via Allhallowgate/Victoria Grove or via St Marygate as normal.

Market Place West will remain open for the first phase of the works and the taxi rank is now relocated outside Boots.

While the works on Market Place East are ongoing, the Transdev 36 service is operating from a temporary bus stop on Fishergate.

Lilla Bathurst, the manager of the business support organisation Ripon BID, said:

In the run up to the vital Christmas trading period, we want local residents and visitors to the city centre to know that we are open for business as usual and measures have been put in place in an attempt to keep disruption to a minimum.
