The countdown is on for the opening of Ripon’s newest retailer with Peacocks scheduled to greet its first customers on Thursday morning.

The value fashion retailer is putting the final touches to its large premises in Fishergate formerly occupied by M&Co, which went into administration in December 2022.

Peacocks, which sells men’s, women’s and children’s clothing, will open just 19 days after Yorkshire Trading Co reopened its refurbished store on the corner of Market Place East and Moss’s Arcade.

Ripon is one of 20 towns and cities around the UK where Peacocks has taken over stores that had been part of the M&Co estate.

The opening will follow other positive movements on the city’s high street, including an ongoing major refurbishment of Halls of Ripon, which will create space for seven independent retailers at its Fishergate premises.

The upgrade is being carried out by Ripon-based property and investment company Sterne Properties Limited.

At the start of the month, independent trader Emma Crossley opened her Bud Florists business in North Street, just a few doors along from Oliver’s Pantry cafe, which has undergone a revamp, with re-decoration and the introduction of new design features.

In November, the outdoor clothing and equipment specialist Trespass, opened in a prime location at Market Square East, that became vacant when Barclays Bank closed its Ripon Branch,

September saw the Portly Pig bottle shop and tap room open in Kirkgate and further up the street multi-terrain cycling specialist retailer Bikemonger made a pre-Christmas move  to a large unit previously occupied by a carpet store.
