A planning application has been submitted to convert Tockwith tennis courts into a multi-use games area.

The application, which has been submitted to North Yorkshire Council, proposes re-surfacing the two existing tennis courts, installing LED floodlights and erecting fencing.

Mike Corbett, chair of Tockwith Sportsfield Trust, which submitted the application, today told the Stray Ferret the new site would have an all-weather surface.

He said:

“The current tennis courts are hard courts, but the surface is poor and weeds are coming through.
“Of course, we’re doing this to improve the club itself, but also to attract young people and give them something to do, rather than just being on their phones.”

The new pitch would be suitable for tennis and five-aside football, Mr Corbett said, adding the Sportsfield Trust also planned to have basketball installed at the open-air site.

The new fencing could also make the court suitable for padel tennis, Mr Corbett added.

If approved, the plans would be partially funded by section 106 monies paid by developers for new housing developments in the village, as well by the football club and Tockwith Festival.

Mr Corbett said:

“If it’s approved, we’d like to get cracking on with it as soon as possible after the decision is made – hopefully we’d start work on it by the summer."

He added the current football and tennis teams would continue to exist, if the plans are approved.

North Yorkshire Council will adjudicate on the application at a later date.
