North Yorkshire Council looks set to apply for almost £1.5 million to defend homes in Knaresborough against flooding.

It follows an investigation into flash floods in the town in 2024 that affected 50 homes and businesses and left some people temporarily homeless.

The funds would go towards making 130 homes in the Knaresborough and surrounding area more resilient to flooding.

The properties that would benefit have been identified as at risk of repeated flood.

The council wants to submit two funding applications: one for £824,200 to the Environment Agency for a flood defence grant and one for £650,000 to the Environment Agency's flood and coastal committee local levy.

Karl Battersby, the council's corporate director for environment, is expected to approve submitting bids by September 23.

Successful bidders are expected to be announced in March 2027.
