With the general election looming there are now only nine days left to register to vote.

The election itself is set to take place on July 4, and the deadline for registering to vote is 11.59pm on Tuesday, June 18.

Voters can register online or by using a paper form.

Who can register?

To register to vote you must be aged 16 or over and a British citizen or an Irish citizen. You can also register if you have permission to enter or stay in the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man.

You may not actually vote until you are 18 years old.

How do I register to vote?

To vote online, the registration process takes around five minutes. You will need your National Insurance number at the ready (although you can still register if you do not have one).

First, click here to access the registration page.

To begin the process, scroll down and click the green Start Now button. If you wish to register by post then click that option below the green button.

Next, you will be asked which country you live in and what your nationality is. Click the green Continue button to progress each time.

After that, you will need to input your date of birth and your full name, followed by your National Insurance Number and address.

Continue through the last few questions about your address and contact details until the final green button says ‘I accept – send my application’. This means you have reached the end of registration and are eligible to vote in the general election in July.

Do I need to register to vote?

You must be on the electoral register so that you can vote in elections or referendums and get on or off the open register.

Generally voters will only need to register to vote once.

For more advice on registering to vote click here or contact the local Election Registration Office.

The deadline for registering to vote is June 18.

The deadline for new postal vote applicants is June 19.

The deadline for new applications to vote by proxy is 5pm on June 26.
