The expanded terminal includes a broader food and drink offering.

The new extension to the terminal at Leeds Bradford Airport opened to passengers this morning (Tuesday, June 17).

The opening marks the end of the first phase of the airport’s ongoing £100 million terminal expansion project.

The airport overhaul has been a long time coming. Ambitious plans were mooted before the covid pandemic, and proposals for a new terminal building were scrapped after a series of delays and a government call-in.

Work on the current project, called LBA:REGEN, finally started in June last year.

The upgraded building allows for a modernised arrivals process, including a new baggage reclaim area and an upgraded passport control facility incorporating advanced security technologies, designed to make journeys smoother and more efficient.

The new terminal also has 83% more seating, with uninterrupted views of the runway and a broader food and drink offering.

There are now two premium lounges, including the brand-new Six Eight One Premium Lounge, which will offer seasonal menus using freshly prepared, locally sourced produce.

The opening marks the end of the first phase of the £100 million extension project.

Work on phase two of the project, which has already begun, will focus on refurbishing the existing terminal.

This will lead to some changes to the usual passenger flows, particularly for passengers leaving the airport. Upon arrival at the terminal, passengers will see hoardings and scaffolding at the terminal front, a relocated Meet & Greet parking area, and changes to bus pick-up and drop-off zones.

A dedicated webpage on the LBA website will be regularly updated with information throughout Phase 2.

By the time the LBA:REGEN project completes at the end of 2026, LBA will have nearly 40% more floorspace, 50% more security lanes, and a 77% increase in luggage reclaim belt capacity.

Vincent Hodder, chief executive of Leeds Bradford Airport, said:

We are delighted to see our new terminal extension open and operational today. It has been an incredible journey to get here, and we know our customers are going to get a completely new experience from LBA from today.

It’s an exciting time for us too; for our employees, stakeholders and business partners, the opening of this building is a huge achievement for all involved.
