A football club in Boroughbridge has said a recent incident that led to two men being arrested was not connected to the club.
North Yorkshire Police last week said officers were called to an “altercation” at Boroughbridge Football Club at around 4pm on April 8.
The incident at the Aldborough Road ground involved a group of young people and two adult men, police said, and two men in their 40s were arrested on suspicion of affray.
But the football club has since issued its own statement on the alleged altercation, which it said was “in no way connected” to the club.
The statement, which was signed off by club chairman Richard Donohoe, said:
Following the statement released by North Yorkshire Police regarding an incident on the afternoon of Wednesday, 8 April, Boroughbridge AFC wishes to clarify the situation for our members and the local community.
The incident occurred at approximately 4pm while the club was closed and not in use. No club-sanctioned activities, training sessions or matches were taking place. We wish to state categorically that this event is in no way connected to Boroughbridge AFC, its staff, its players or its operations.
The club also claimed it has reported several incidents of alleged antisocial behaviour in recent years.
The statement adds the club is "cooperating fully" with North Yorkshire Police and urged anyone with information to contact the force by calling 101 and quoting reference number 12260062506.
"Boroughbridge AFC remains dedicated to providing a safe and positive environment for our community. We thank you for your continued understanding and support", it added.
No further details of the incident have been released, but when the Stray Ferret asked for an update, North Yorkshire Police yesterday (April 13) said: “Two men in their 40s have been bailed with conditions whilst our enquiries continue”.
