A man in his 80s has become the latest person to lose their life on the A61 between Ripon and Harrogate.
The road was closed for 14 hours following a head-on collision at 5.10pm yesterday (April 5).
According to a North Yorkshire Police statement this evening, the incident happened about 1.5 miles south of Ripon, at the end of the section of road known as daffodil bends.
The statement added:
A local man aged in his mid-80s was driving a black BMW 318 car that was travelling north when the collision occurred with a black Peugeot 3008 SUV heading south driven by a man in his late 20s from Warwickshire.
They were both taken to hospital by ambulance for treatment. Sadly, the driver of the BMW passed away just after midnight.
Ambulance, fire and police attended the scene which remained closed until just after 7am on Sunday.
We are supporting the deceased’s family while the investigation is ongoing.
Officers urged witnesses and motorists with dashcam footage to email Drew.Crossley@northyorkshire.police.uk or call North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 2, and ask for Drew Crossley.

There have been a spate of fatal accidents on the A61 in recent years.
Lucjan Wilk was struck by a car getting off the bus on the road near Knox Mill Lane in November 2023. His inquest was held last month.
Four people were killed in the space of eight days on the A61 at South Stainley in September 2023.
A 59-year-old motorist died and then a mother and two children, who were from Ukraine but were living in Ripon at the time, were killed in a three-vehicle collision involving a double-decker bus.
The council subsequently approved plans to reduce of the A61 but this has yet to be implemented.
