The Green Party has selected Arnold Warneken as its candidate for Wetherby and Easingwold in the general election on 4 July.
Mr Warneken is currently the North Yorkshire councillor for Ouseburn, the chair of Tockwith Parish Council, and lives in Cowthorpe, which are all within the new constituency.
He replaces Anna Jacobs who the Greens previously named as their candidate but subsequently stood down for personal reasons.
An experienced politician, Mr Warneken was first elected to Harrogate District Council in 1991.
He has stood in Westminster elections three times before, once in Harrogate, and twice in Selby and Ainsty, where in July last year he finished third out of 13 candidates.
Mr Warneken said:
Wetherby and Easingwold is a completely new constituency, bridging two local authorities, and so it will need a competent MP to satisfy the differing needs of the urban and rural communities.
For the last two years I have acquired a reputation for getting things done where others give up. I have tackled residents’ problems and achieved many positive results.”
The issues I have failed to fix are those where government policies are to blame, and that is why I want to be a Green voice at Westminster, to put an end to austerity, and to hold the new government to account, preventing any further U-turns on people- and planet-centred policies.
He added green policies would be funded by taxing the super-rich, fossil fuel companies "and other polluters who have made vast fortunes at the expense of our health and our climate".
