Work has begun to modernise Bewerley Park outdoor education centre near Pateley Bridge.
It is one of two North Yorkshire Council-owned outdoor education centres in North Yorkshire undergoing redevelopment at a combined cost of £4.2 million.
A 95-bed accommodation block is due to be created by summer next year at Bewerley Park, which generations of schoolchildren have visited in Nidderdale National Landscape. It offers activities such as canoeing, caving and high ropes.
The centre will also have 14 ensuite rooms, accommodation for visiting staff, a drying room and break-out spaces for residential school trips.
Generations of children have taken part in activities at Bewerley Park.
Councillor Andrew Murday, a Liberal Democrat who represents Pateley Bridge and Nidderdale on North Yorkshire Council, said:
Children have an outstanding experience during their stay here, be it learning about nature or taking part in exciting adventure activities or simply forging friendships, and are supported by a highly qualified, experienced and passionate team.
However, the old wooden accommodation buildings are tired and require modernising so that children and young people can enjoy the brilliant outdoor learning facilities we have in North Yorkshire.
The council approved the first phase of work at its outdoor education centres in November last year.
Work to modernise the East Barnby site has yet to begin.
Cllr Annabel Wilkinson, the Conservative executive member for education, learning and skills at the council, said:
The redevelopment demonstrates our commitment to outdoor learning experiences and will provide modern and comfortable accommodation for schools, clubs and groups to enjoy for decades.
