The filling station at Morrisons in Boroughbridge looks set to be remodelled, with the addition of a rear extension and an electric vehicle (EV) charging zone.

The plans also include four new jetwash bays and an electricity sub-station with low-voltage panel to regulate power at the Minskip Road site.

Nine new trees will be planted, as well as 40 square metres of shrubbery.

The work would represent the latest phase of periodic development for the site. An older filling station building was demolished and the current one built in 2020, and the store posted on Facebook just last July to announce the reopening of the “newly renovated” service station.

Forecourt owner Motor Fuel Group (MFG) originally submitted the current application just two months later, in September 2024.

The consultation period is currently underway and due to close on Saturday, April 5. North Yorkshire Council’s target date for deciding the application is Monday, April 14.

Last year, Morrisons sold 337 petrol forecourts to MFG to aid the development of ultra-rapid electric vehicle charging. The deal was worth an estimated £2.5 billion, and saw Morrisons take a 20% stake in MFG.

William Bannister, CEO of MFG, said at the time:

This strategic acquisition, and the resulting partnership with the highly respected Morrisons brand, is the next major growth investment for MFG. It is anchored in the potential for us to accelerate the roll-out of ultra-rapid EV charging infrastructure across the UK while also giving customers a first-class retail offer.

MFG said its £400 million plans would see the installation of 800 ultra-rapid 150kW EV chargers across the estate. The four chargers proposed for the filling station in Boroughbridge are 300kW appliances, but each service two bays, significantly boosting recharging capability in the town.
