Businesses from our region will be heading to the Middle East next month, when they join a trade mission to the United Arab Emirates.

West & North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce will lead a delegation of companies to Dubai and Abu Dhabi from February 9 to 14 in order to strengthen trade links with the Gulf state.

Among the events planned include a Great Yorkshire Show garden party at the British Embassy, an economic update at HSBC Tower, a day in Abu Dhabi visiting a number of Abu Dhabi Chamber members and a visit to a Free Zone in central Dubai.

The main sponsors for the mission are Schofield Sweeney, University of Bradford and data management specialist firm Data Stream.

James Mason, chief executive of West & North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce, said:

The appetite for forging new business connections globally remains high in Yorkshire and, when we consulted with our network, the UAE was a clear stand out choice for a trade mission following on from highly successful visits to the USA, Pakistan, Kenya and Sri Lanka in 2024.

We will be taking our members to the key institutions in Dubai and Abu Dhabi and anticipate a raft of transactions off of the back of what we are about to convene.

The Chamber will be joined on the trade mission by a number of the region’s leading businesses including RJJ Software, Platinum Partnership Solicitors, LOVE IN CARE, Madison May, Tudor International Freight, Sound Leisure, FB Parrish and Son Ltd, Wodar, Aqua Interpreting Group, ITC, and Marske Hall Country Estate.

Law firm takes on rugby referee

McCormicks Solicitors in Harrogate has extended its expertise in rugby union with the appointment of a former professional women's rugby player as a trainee solicitor.

Lana Wilks is also a qualified referee and was recently selected to sit on the RFU (Rugby Football Union) disciplinary panel.

A published legal writer, she graduated from the University of York with a degree in Law and is now studying for a Master's in Law at the University of Law, which she will complete in September before qualifying as a solicitor next year.

She will work with partner David Birks and solicitor Anmol Roth in McCormicks' Sports Law and Commercial Litigation team.

Mr Birks said:

This appointment reinforces McCormicks' position and recent number-one ranking in the Legal 500 (Yorkshire & the Humber), as one of the top law firms providing tailored and specialist advice to sports associations and prominent sporting individuals.

Lana’s interest in and knowledge of Rugby Union will undoubtedly prove an asset.

Events firm wins Grand Prix deal

Harrogate-based Impulse Decisions has secured a deal to be an official agent for the Formula 1 British Grand Prix at Silverstone for 2025.

The company is viewing this as a significant boost to its aim of raising more money for charities in the UK through its silent auction services.

Head of sport Ross Bousfield said:

This is a great boost to the event side of the business, and our commitment to providing the best hospitality packages for F1 events worldwide. To be able to be official representatives for such an iconic race at Silverstone is a massive achievement for Impulse and all the team.

We are also delighted to be able to continue to represent the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in December too, as well as being official agents with the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, and this is all based on the success of last year.
