Combined authority redundancy payments more than double in last year
The number of redundancy payments at York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority has more than doubled in the last year.
Redundancy payments, also known as termination benefits, are payments which are given to an employee when their job ends, such as when they are made redundant.
According to the authority’s statement of accounts for 2025/26, a total of £147,000 in packages were given to five employees in the last year.
This compares with £54,000 to one employee in 2024/25.
A spokesperson for the combined authority told the Stray Ferret that £120,000 of the total cost was due to organisational changes in North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.
David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire who chairs the combined authority, took on the responsibilities of police, fire and crime commissioner for the region in May 2024.
This means that the fire service’s transactions now appear on the combined authority accounts.
Meanwhile, the remaining £27,000 was for the outgoing head of partnerships and commissioning at the authority.
A spokesperson for York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority said:
Following the election of the mayor in May 2024, the mayor assumed the functions previously exercised by the police, fire and crime commissioner in relation to North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service. All financial transactions in relation to the North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service are now reflected in the combined authority’s accounts.
Of the £147,000 noted in the combined authority accounts, £120,000 relates to non-firefighter staff within the fire and rescue service as part of their wider organisational changes. The remaining £27,000 is separately disclosed in the note on senior officer remuneration.
