Ripon residents without wheelie bins will have their household waste collected weekly

Ripon council tax payers facing a fortnightly collection of their household rubbish bags have received a reprieve after concerns were raised.

Some households in the city have rubbish collected in black sacks rather than from wheelie bins.

But North Yorkshire Council's recent decision to reduce the collections from weekly to fortnightly caused concern.

Now the council's waste and street scene department has written to affected residents.

The letter, seen by the Stray Ferret, says:

After conducting a review of feedback and consulting with both residents and councillors on pending changes to your sack collection service, the decision has been taken to retain your weekly collection.

We will revisit this project later in the year for further review.

Councillor Andrew Williams, a member of the Conservatives and Independents group on North Yorkshire Council who represents Ripon Minster and Moorside, said:

The problem arose for people who, for whatever reason, did not receive a wheelie bin for their household waste, when the new fortnighly collection came into force.

They were concerned about the prospect of having black bags full of rubbish outside their homes, awaiting collection for two weeks.

I raised the matter after being contacted by a number of residents living in the Minster and Moorside division that I represent and I'm pleased to see that common sense has prevailed.
