The brains behind Apple TV’s ‘Slow Horses’ will chair the Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival next year.

Harrogate International Festivals today announced Mick Herron, author of the eight-part series 'Slough House', as programming chair for the 2025 event, which will celebrate some of the biggest names in crime fiction.

Mr Herron has been shortlisted for the festival’s novel of the year award six times and won it for 'Slough House' in 2022.

He said:

The Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival is an annual highlight for crime writers the world over, a collegiate gathering where the callous and cosy genres meet, and their practitioners discover they have more in common than might have been expected.

I attended my first Harrogate weekend ten years ago, and each one since has provided a wealth of happy memories. So, it's an honour and a thrill to be invited to work alongside a brilliant, dedicated committee, with an eye to producing a festival that will continue to promote the wide-ranging talents of our community and offer new treats alongside familiar pleasures.

The Slough House series follows a group of washed-up British intelligence agents, who have each somehow botched a case. The "slow horses", as they are called in the books, are relegated to Slough House.

Apple TV’s adaptation – which stars Gary Oldman, Kristin Scott Thomas and Jack Lowden – has been nominated for Golden Globes, Academy Awards and Primetime Emmy awards.

The Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival will return to Harrogate from July 17 to 20 next year.
