A cruise company has been involved in a “near miss” on Ripon Canal after a charity carried out work on nearby trees.
Ripon Scenic Cruises told the Stray Ferret that one of its boats was travelling down the river when it nearly collided with a rope across the canal last week.
The company offers narrowboat cruises down the canal five days a week.
It said the rope was put in place by Canal & River Trust, a charity which looks after 2,000 miles of waterways in England and Wales.
The charity was removing branches on nearby trees, but had stretched the rope over the canal.
However, Vicky Willis, of Ripon Scenic Cruises, said it had no prior communication that the work was being carried out.
She said:
The Canal & River Trust were removing tree branches - no warning, no watchers, no prior contact made to say they'd be working. We nearly ran into a rope stretched right over the canal with a full boat. Without the foresight of our skipper, who knows what would have happened.
The Stray Ferret has approached the trust about the incident and to offer it the chance to respond to the concerns raised.
But we had not received a response by the time of publication.
