A major new bar being redeveloped on Harrogate's Parliament Street is expected to open next month.

The Mayfair Pub and Kitchen will be based in the former Jamie Oliver restaurant.

Durham-based Newgate Pubs and Bars this year secured a premises license to open the venue from 9am to 1.30am seven days a week.

Work began on the site last month to transform the unit into a large bar. Signs were installed in the windows advertising for staff and Christmas bookings.

The Stray Ferret spoke today to Joe Smith, director of Newgate Pubs and Bars, who said:

It will open in mid to late November. It is all looking positive, Harrogate is a lovely area, and it is nice to be a part of it.

It is still a building site at the moment but we have put a lot of money and effort into it so I can’t wait to get it across the line.

The company is currently hiring front of house, kitchen, cleaning and management staff. Mr Smith told the Stray Ferret 35 new jobs will be created.

He added the ongoing £750,000 refurbishment would see a new bar area and a refurbished terrace created and “loads of big screens and comfortable furniture" installed.

Mr Smith said the large unit was being broken up into smaller areas such as function rooms and a ‘man-cave area’ for activities like darts.

This will be the third venture for Newgate Pubs and Bars, which already operates venues under the Mayfair brand in Newcastle and Doncaster.

Mr Smith said:

The Mayfair is a chameleon of a business. It can go from somewhere to get a nice coffee and bring your laptop, to pub lunches and afternoon teas to a late-night bar.

We will have good music, good food and a great atmosphere.

The food menu will include street food and pub classics while the drinks menu will feature cocktails, wine and draft beers.

The large building has struggled to find long-term tenants since Jamie's Italian closed in 2018.

It later operated as Wagyu Bar and Grill and Solita Foodhall, but has remained vacant since 2021 after plans to open a Tomahawk Steakhouse  never materialised.

Mr Smith told the Stray Ferret that there was still no official opening date, however its social media states opening night will be November 24.

He said:

I am over the moon with the progress at the site and it is such an exciting project that has been met with good feedback.
