Fell rescue volunteers were called out on Sunday (August 17) to help a walker near Fountains Abbey.

The man had suffered a suspected stroke and was being guided to an ambulance by paramedics from the Yorkshire Ambulance Service, but they called out Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association as there was a locked gate and a short hill climb between the patient and the ambulance.

In a social media post, the association explained:

Looking to avoid any unnecessary effort on a hot day, the first team members on scene removed the gate from its hinges, enabling the ambulance to be driven down to the casualty.

The casualty was then assisted into the ambulance before being driven off to hospital. The casualty’s walking partner was taken back to their car in one of the team vehicles, whilst the remainder put the gate back to how it was on our arrival.

The association also thanked the other walkers who helped at the scene.

The incident was the 42nd that the association has attended so far this year.

Founded in 1948, Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association is run entirely by volunteers and is funded solely by donations.

It covers a huge area which includes Upper Wharfedale, parts of Lower Wharfedale, Littondale, Nidderdale, Harrogate, Ripon and surrounding areas as far as the A1.

In common with the other fell rescue association in the Yorkshire Dales, it carries out cave rescues as well as mountain rescues.
