The inspirational story of a young refugee’s fight to follow her dreams is told in a short film to be screened by the Harrogate Film Society this week.
The Long Away Game follows 26-year-old Sabriah Nawrozi, a former player for the Afghan national women’s football team, as she embarks on a new chapter as the community captain of her new hometown team, Harrogate Town AFC.
Sabriah’s life in football was brought to a swift halt when the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan in 2021, as women were no longer allowed to participate in any sport. But along with some of her teammates, she managed to escape on a flight out of Kabul that was sponsored by American reality TV megastar Kim Kardashian.
She was resettled in Harrogate and, with strong support from her new club, has been able to restart her career in football.
The Stray Ferret told her story this year.
The Long Away Game will be shown at 7pm on Wednesday, October 1 at the Odeon in Harrogate. It was broadcast nationally in June on TNT Sports.
Ms Nawrozi herself will be at the event to answer questions from the public after the screening, alongside Tamanna Krami, who was arts programme manager for the British Council in Kabul and also fled the Taliban in 2021.
The Long Away Game is just 13 minutes long, but it will be shown alongside two other short films focusing on Afghan women: the BAFTA-nominated Yellow, and Oscar-winning How to Skateboard in a Warzone (If You're a Girl).
Tickets, which include a drink after the films and before the Q&A, are free, but advance booking is essential as spaces are limited to 50. Tickets can be booked here.
