Two geese were killed when they flew into power lines near Ripon.

Firefighters were called to reports of a fire in a field at West Tanfield at 9.22am on Sunday, June 9.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service's incident report said:

This was a small fire caused by downed power lines, believed to have been due to geese colliding with the lines. Northern Powergrid in attendance.

The Stray Ferret contacted Northern Powergrid for further details about the incident.

The company confirmed two geese had hit the line and it led to a power outage for 340 customers.

A spokesperson said:

At around 9.15am on Sunday we received reports of smoke in a field caused by a downed power line. Our engineers attended and confirmed that sadly, this was due to two geese hitting the overhead power line.

Our teams carried out a safety interruption to isolate the power supply, resulting in a power cut for around 340 customers. By switching electricity through alternative routes on our network, we successfully restored power to 123 customers within seven minutes, and a further 197 customers by around 11am. Our remaining 21 customers affected were restored by around 2pm.

The spokesperson added:

Our teams are proactively looking for a solution to reduce the risk of bird travel in this area of our network.
