Former doorman at Harrogate bar admits assault
A former doorman at a Harrogate bar has admitted chasing a man and assaulting him in the street.
Jesse Durrant appeared before Harrogate Magistrates Court on Thursday (September 10), where he spoke to confirm his name, date of birth and address.
Durrant, 31, admitted two charges of assault by beating and one charge of using threatening and abusive words with intent to cause fear of violence.
Sarah Tyrer, prosecuting, told magistrates that the 31-year-old had been working as security staff at Mojo bar, on Parliament Street, in the early hours of May 23 this year.
Ms Tyrer said a male had been refused entry to the bar, but managed to get past security into the premises.
She said:
Mr Durrant was asked to eject him, which he did.
The prosecution said during the ejection, Durrant slapped the male.
The court heard that this led to retaliation from the male outside the bar and the defendant became aggressive.
Ms Tyrer said the man then ran off, but Durrant, of South Farm Crescent in Leeds, followed him.
She said:
Mr Durrant took off his security badge and ran after him. He restrained him and kicked him in the head.
Ms Tyrer told magistrates that during a police interview, Durrant claimed he had been assaulted by the male and received injuries.
Assault in York
In a separate incident, the court heard that the 31-year-old was working at Revolution bar in York when he punched a named man who was being ejected from the bar.
Ms Tyrer said the victim had initially complained to security about another man in the bar, but was himself “grabbed by door staff” and taken outside.
During the ejection, Durrant, who was at the door, punched the man in the back of the head.
Ms Tyrer said:
During police interview, he admitted responsibility [for the punch]. He said he had seen the victim involved in an altercation. He said he was acting in self defence of his colleagues. He admitted that his use of force was unacceptable.
The prosecutor said Durrant had previous convictions for assault, including inflicting actual bodily harm in May 2018.
Durrant’s defence said he had pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity and requested that the case be adjourned for a pre-sentence report to be prepared.
They added that he lost his security licence following the incidents.
Durrant will appear at Harrogate Magistrates Court for a sentencing hearing on October 16, 2026.
