GALLERY: A wild day of weather in Harrogate district

Storm Bert brought a wild day of weather to the Harrogate district, with early morning snow followed by persistent rain.

It hasn't been great for motorists but children who were up early made the most of the conditions before a rapid thaw set in mid-morning.

But it wasn't much fun on the roads, particularly on the A61 between Ripon and Harrogate and on routes south of Harrogate, including Pannal. Here's the A61 at South Stainley early today. 

It was even too much for some of those trying to help. This gritter was pictured by Sarah Bowes stuck on Valley Drive in Harrogate. 

Further rain is expected this evening and overnight. At 5.15pm this evening, there were 29 Environment Agency flood alerts issued, with a cluster in West Yorkshire, especially Calderdale, and Greater Manchester. 

The closest to the Harrogate district were on the upper River Wharfe at Buckden, Bolton Abbey and Ilkley and the River Aire around Leeds.

Drier weather is expected tomorrow.
