A family pie company from the Harrogate district has won multiple accolades at a national food awards ceremony.

Voakes Free From, which is the gluten and wheat free range from Voakes Pies, received gold, silver and bronze awards in eight different categories at the annual Free From Food Awards in London.

Major brands such as M&S, Tesco and Birdseye were competing for the top spot alongside Voakes Free From in categories such as ‘child and teen’ and ‘savoury snacking’.

Voakes Free From was named best micro brand of the year for the third consecutive year.

The company, which produces gluten and wheat free pie and pastry products, was developed by pie maker Andrew Voakes’ son Nick and his partner Laura from pigs reared on the family farm at Whixley.

The village, on the edge of the former Harrogate district, is seven miles from Knaresborough.

The range stems from Ms Voakes' diagnosis with Coeliac disease in 2011.

She told the Stray Ferret:

We were thrilled to win so many awards and the standout award for us is the best micro brand. It is so exciting and a great chance to showcase our products in the free from community.

Free from foods are usually expensive and often not great quality, so it can be quite a commitment. So, we are so happy to be recognised and the awards will show many people that we have that trust and confidence.

The awards, organised by Lincolnshire-based events company Montgomery Group, are billed as the UK’s only awards dedicated to free from food and drink.
