The pipe treated with Belzona's product did not buckle.

A Harrogate manufacturing company demonstrated one of its best-selling products today – with the help of a monster truck.

Belzona invited customers, journalists, its 100-plus employees, and staff from neighbouring businesses to the event, which was held in a carpark next to its Claro Road premises.

From its Harrogate HQ, the company designs and manufactures composite materials and protective coatings for industrial usage, exporting them to 120 countries, and was keen to show off the “exceptional strength and durability” of its flagship product, Belzona SuperWrap II.

The monster truck, hired specially from Lincoln-based Red Dragon Monster Truck, first drove over a steel pipe that had been compromised, causing it to buckle under the weight immediately.

The vehicle then revved its 6.5 litre Chevrolet V8 engine and took a few dusty turns at speed around the carpark, before squashing a small blue hatchback car – intentionally.

After a few more figures-of-eight, it fulfilled its mission by driving over another steel pipe that was compromised like the first one, but had been treated with the Super Wrap II.

To the relief of Belzona’s management and PR team, that pipe held firm.

The monster truck weighs about five tonnes.

The stunt was an unusual departure for Belzona, which has previously confined most of its PR activities to the trade press.

But the company will celebrate 75 years in business next year, and is already starting to ramp up its publicity drive.
