A new food business has opened in Harrogate to combat what its owners decribe as “sub-standard takeaways.”

The Gourmet Food Shack, which opened last Thursday (November 7), specialises in selling meals without additives, colourings or preservatives.

Based in the former Caseco electricals unit on Knaresborough Road, it has an in-house kitchen and deli, which sells cooked chilled meals for customers to take home. They can then be refrigerated and heated.

The venture is owned by husband-and-wife team Helen and Mal.

Since the couple secured the building in August it has undergone a full refurbishment.

Helen told the Stray Ferret that the idea for a tapas kitchen and deli was born from frustration surrounding the lack of choice for takeaways.

She said:

We were fed up with sub-standard takeaways and foods full of additives and preservatives and thought everyone else must be too. There isn’t a lot of choice, and you pay a lot of money for it.

If you are like us, have busy lives, juggling work and household chores cooking is sometimes the last thing on your mind.

We are both passionate about food and wanted to provide good, healthy food that tastes as it should.

Mal  is a self-trained chef and cooks the food on site at The Gourmet Food Shack.

The menu includes a wide range of Spanish tapas and fusion tapas dishes as well as specials such as cottage pie, lamb hotpot and Hungarian pork goulash.
