Commercial Street

A Harrogate shopping street is to launch the town’s answer to Black Friday this weekend.

Commercial Street will host a day of discounts and offers in an initiative known as Purple Saturday on Saturday (October 26).

Purple Saturday celebrates independent businesses on the street.

Commercial Street has its own retailers’ group, which has over 20 members, all of which will be participating.

Staff will dress in purple and the initiatives include a tombola and a raffle run by Harrogate Town AFC, with a George Thomson-signed junior shirt up for grabs.

The event will also see three charity stalls set up on the street – New Beginnings, Miss Mollies and Harrogate Hospital and Community Charity.

The street has hosted charity events previously, but this is the first Purple Saturday event.

It has been organised by the committee of the retailers’ group, which includes Sue Kramer of Crown Jewellers, Tony Spowage of Curtain & Blind Design and Susan Hartley of Lilly's Bistro & Café.

Ms Hartley said:

With the economic climate we aim to get people back on the street. The retailers will have discounts, and it will be our version of Black Friday.

We wanted to do something to boost the retailers on the street and something for charity again, so we decided to combine them.

We want to make sure that people know about Commercial Street, a lot of people miss us and just head towards Beulah Street, but they are always delighted to find us.

Retailers such as Tarbett’s, The Cheeseboard and Rafi’s Spicebox will all have discounts.

Businesses on the street will operate during their usual opening hours on Purple Saturday.
