Harrogate teen rugby star signs long-term contract with Leeds Rhinos
Former Harrogate Grammar School pupil Oscar Brown has signed a contract extension with rugby league club Leeds Rhinos through to the 2029 season.
Brown made the switch to rugby league just two years ago, after having been scouted by Leeds Rhinos at a Harrogate RUFC match.
He then joined the Rhinos academy, where, according to the club, he quickly became one of its rising stars. This season has been his first training with the club's senior team.
Brown said:
I am delighted to have signed a contract extension. There’s been a lot of hard work, not only from myself but from the coaches and other people around me helping out. I had the chance to play for the first team in pre-season and that was a great experience. I am enjoying learning all the time and working with Chev Walker. Obviously, in my position, Chev achieved everything possible during his playing career and it is great to have him as a mentor.
Brown made 11 appearances for the under-18s Rhinos side, and was the team’s top scorer that year on their run to the grand final, with an impressive tally of 15 tries.
The young centre made the move up to train with the first team this year, and went on to score on his debut in a pre-season fixture against Castleford Tigers.
He has continued to impress for Rhinos reserves, with 11 tries to his name so far this year.
One notable effort in April saw him score six tries against Bradford Bulls reserves in an 82-0 victory for Leeds.
Rhinos reserves coach Chev Walker said:
We don’t know how high his ceiling is. He’s a great kid who works hard and wants to get better, so he’s one to watch out for. It’s exciting to be a part of his journey.
Leeds Rhinos currently sit at the top of the Super League, two points ahead of rivals Wigan Warriors with five scheduled matches yet to play. The grand final will be played on October 3.
