Twelve photographs taken by Liz Hatton, the Harrogate teenager who died last year from a rare cancer, are to be auctioned alongside works by world-class photographers next month.

Harrogate auction house Morphets has agreed to waive its hammer fee, so all the proceeds will be donated to charity.

After Liz’s death in November at the age of just 17, her family set up a JustGiving page with the aim of raising £100,000 for Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumour Research – a charity that funds research into the cancer Liz died of. So far, the campaign has raised more than £70,000.

Ian Marshall of Morphets has spent the last six months putting the auction project together. He told the Stray Ferret:

This auction will be one of the first of its kind in the UK, with more than 200 photographs by some of the leading practitioners from across Europe, including Liz Hatton’s work.

We’d been planning the auction for some months, and then sadly the timing was right to tie it in with the sale of Liz’s photographs, which her mum Vicky immediately agreed to.

These are rare and limited-edition images – some are one of one – and many have never been seen before publicly.

Because of the rarity and standard of the pieces, we’re hoping the auction will generate a lot of interest from buyers globally, so that we can raise as much money as possible for charity.

A pupil at Harrogate Grammar School, Liz Hatton was a talented photographer who received the highest grade possible in the subject at GCSE and had started the A level course.

After she was diagnosed with cancer, she spent the last months of her life fulfilling a photography ‘bucket list’, taking pictures of the Royal Ballet, catwalk fashion models, the drag artistes of Drag Race UK, comedian Michael McIntyre, actress Tilda Swinton, London Air Ambulance and Olympic cyclist Sir Mark Cavendish receiving his knighthood from Prince William at Buckingham Palace. A selection of these will be included in the sale.

The sale catalogue can be found here; Liz’s pictures start at Lot 235. All the works will be on view to the public before the sale at Morphets on Albert Street on January 31, from 10am to 6pm.

The auction will be streamed live on both easyliveauction.com and thesaleroom.com.
