Historic Knaresborough pub reopens after £250,000 refurbishment
A historic Knaresborough pub has reopened after a £250,000 refurbishment.
Mother Shipton Inn in Low Bridge, Knaresborough, reopened its doors yesterday (Thursday August 27) after a "transformational refurbishment".
The pub was first constructed as a gatehouse in the 17th century, and has been operating as a pub since the 18th century, making it one of the oldest in the country.
The refurbishment followed a combined £250,000 investment with the pub's owners Admiral Taverns — the UK's largest pub company.
An admiral taverns spokesperson said:
The refurbishment breathes a new lease of life into the Mother Shipton Inn to elevate and modernise the overall look and feel of the pub – ultimately enabling the manager to further cement it as the go-to community hub for local customers.
The pub is named in honour of Ursula Sontheil, better known as Mother Shipton, the legendary Yorkshire prophetess who also lends her name to the neighbouring limestone cave tourist attraction.
The renovations include upgraded fixtures and fittings as well as an update to the kitchen, which will continue to serve pub classics made from "locally sourced ingredients".

There has also been new lighting and signage added to the pub's exterior, as well as sufficient open-air seating for up to 100 customers.
Matt Chapman, manager at the Mother Shipton Inn, said:
I’m absolutely thrilled with how the refurbishment came along. Every detail has been carefully considered to ensure that the Mother Shipton Inn feels fresh and exciting, while still retaining the warmth and character that makes this place so special for the community.
I have loved every minute of my time at the Mother Shipton Inn so far and I would like to thank everyone, from my family and friends, our customers and of course the team at Admiral Taverns, for all their ongoing support. I look forward to everything the future holds for this fantastic community pub!
Mr Chapman hopes to host a busy schedule of entertainment for the community, including a quiz night every Thursday from 7pm.
He has already used the occasion of the pub's reopening to raise money for the Knaresborough Foodbank.
